Greet the Students at McDonogh 35 – August 8th

Please join us on Thursday, August 8th from 7:15 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. to greet the students of McDonogh 35 High School! Alumni should arrive by 7:15 am.

We’d love for you to come spend the morning with us and be part of the cultural and academic shifts from the start. The greeting of our students will take place at the front entrance of McDonogh 35 and you have the opportunity to greet the Roneagles before they enter the building on their first full day!

McDonogh 35 Graduation 

This year’s graduation is May 24, 2019 at 3:00pm at the Xavier Convocation Center.  We would like all classes represented. If you are going to participate in graduation, please send email to Romero Stewart.
All alumni are invited to participate, in the 2019 graduation ceremony, especially classes celebrating special year milestones. Participants must be present by 2:30pm. We will line up by graduation year and walk in ahead of the graduates. During the ceremony, when the President gives remarks, classes will be called by decade and requested to stand when you decade is called. Classes celebrating their milestone reunion years will be recognized. Ladies are requested to wear white and gentlemen suit/sport coat shirt and ties. Show your Roneagle pride and show up for graduation.

Give Back through Give NOLA – May 7, 2019

Give NOLA Day, is an initiative of the Greater New Orleans Foundation.  It is a one-day online giving event. For 24 hours, everyone who loves our region can support their favorite local causes by donating to one or more of the 700+ participating nonprofit organizations.  Once again this year the McDonogh35 Alumni Association will be participating in GiveNOLA Day.  Here is where you come in.  We are asking every McDonogh 35 alumni, parent, spouse or sibling of an alumni or friends of an alumni to give to the McDonogh 35 Alumni Association.  These funds allow us to support the students of McDonogh 35 High School.  This year the alumni association provided over $7,000.00 for the Scholars Program and will award over $9,000 to graduating seniors in scholarships.  We would like to do more but we need your help.
There is a $100.00 challenge to all alumni but any amount will be welcomed and appreciated.

Sponsor a Scholar

Mr. Harold Clay, Executive Director of McDonogh 35, and his leadership team have decided to provide academic incentives to students as per the attached document. Of course, alumni support is needed to help fund the awards for students. Each one of us is requested to give at least $135 to provide a jacket or cash incentive to students who earn the awards. In addition, at the end of the school year, Mr. Clay would like to recognize students who make noteworthy growth during the year. The first awards will be given at the end of the first semester so we have some time to make our contributions and raise funds for this important endeavor. A link will be added to the drop down menu on our Association’s website so you can donate online. If you prefer to write or send a check, make it payable to the McDonogh 35 Alumni Association and in the memo line write: Donation for Sponsor a Scholar. All donations are welcome. Of course, we are looking for donors who are able to give substantial dollars, so if you are able, give more, and please share this request with others who may have philanthropic goals and financial resources. In addition to financial support, mentors are needed to support and encourage students throughout the year. If you are interested in mentoring a student or a small group of students, contact Ms. Gipson who will be in charge of Culture and Climate at the school.

McDonogh 35 PTO Fundraiser

Please purchase a $10 car wash ticket.  The tickets can be used at any of the following Pelican Pointe Car Wash locations, and you go to the car wash at your convenience and there is no expiration date.  Also, it is always free to vacuum your vehicle.
The proceeds will help the PTO fund more activities and contests for the students at McDonogh#35.

Roneagle in the Spotlight: Mildred Lyons Reese

Mildred Lyons Reese was born on July 28, 1918 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at a party with family and friends. Mildred currently resides in Evans, Georgia.
Mildred is a 1935 graduate of McDonogh 35 High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dillard University and Master of Science in Social Work from Atlanta University. She also completed post graduate work at Columbia University and Tulane University.
A retired educator, she served as Assistant Principal of McDonogh 35 High School, Principal of Marie E. Couvent Elementary School and School Social Worker for Orleans Parish Schools. An active community volunteer, following retirement, she served as Administrative Assistant to Urban League CEO and Program Administrator for the Council on Aging. Mildred served on the New Orleans Planning Commission and the Regional Planning Commission. She was a member of numerous community boards including YMCA, Urban League, League of Women Voters, the New Orleans Council on Aging, and the Bright Pre-School for the Deaf. She is a life member of Sigma Gamma Rho and the Atlanta University Alumni Association.
Mildred married Lorenzo J. Reese, a teacher and administrator, on November 11, 1948. Their marriage lasted until God called Lorenzo home on May 3, 1993. Mildred was active in her church community in New Orleans serving as Sunday School Superintendent, Vacation Bible School Director and Deaconess. She was a member of Tulane Memorial Baptist Church. Following the aftermath of Katrina, she moved to Augusta and joined Gospel Water Branch Baptist Church. Until her health declined Mildred was a member of the Sunday School, served on the Publicity Committee and a Deaconess. She also authored articles for the church newsletter. Mildred is a published author. She authored and published America and Us and co-authored African American Males; Teachers Make a Difference.
The recipient of numerous awards including; Clark Atlanta University Alumni Association Award in Education, Urban League Whitney Young, Jr. Brotherhood Award, The Links, Inc. Unsung Heroes Award, University of New Orleans First Citizen of the Learning Society, Certificate of Merit from New Orleans Mayor Moon Landrieu, Service Citation as Board Member of Mayor Sidney Barthelemy’s Educational Foundation, NOPSI Consumer Roundtable Award, PTA Outstanding Community Service Award, and National Council of Negro Women Community Leaders Award.

Judge Omar Mason

Congratulations to Omar Mason, Class of 1992, on being elected Judge of Civil District Court. Division E. Thank you for being another distinguished Roneagle. Keep soaring, ever high, even higher!

Roneagle in the Spotlight: Antoinette Williams

Antoinette Williams (C/O 2017) was born and raised in Uptown New Orleans, Louisiana. Throughout her younger years, as she focused on her studies she also became very active and involved in both extracurricular activities and community involvement. Upon attending McDonogh35, Antoinette continued such efforts. She frequently volunteered to assist teachers and staff with various duties. Miss Williams was a member of the Lady Roneagle Volleyball team as well as President of McDonogh35’s Student Government Association. While serving as President, Antoinette connected the student body, teachers, administrators, and alumni with multiple events. Concluding her stay at McDonogh35, Antoinette graduated valedictorian of the 2017 class. However, her participation did not stop there. After graduating Antoinette became an active member of the Alumni Association as well as a season long volunteer with the Volleyball team. Currently, Antoinette is attending Xavier University of Louisiana on a full ride academic scholarship. She is set to leave the United States January 19, 2019 to study abroad in London for an entire semester. Her scholarship covers her tuition and parts of housing but additional funds are needed and greatly appreciated. Please click on the link to support this Roneagle as she continues to soar.
