TEALS Partner School – Volunteers Needed

McDonogh 35 Senior High School has an exciting opportunity to offer computer science next year. We are investing in our students by partnering with Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS to offer:
  • Intro to Computer Science – Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Python CS 1
  • Spring: AP CSP – Code.org with CMU AP CSP
As a TEALS partner school, McDonogh 35 needs technical volunteers to team-teach this course with our teacher.  McDonogh 35 will hold the course first period, allowing volunteers to go to work after volunteering. If you work in tech and would be interested in making a difference in our students’ future success, please contact Mrs. Laci Blondell  or apply at Microsoft.com/TEALS.
Please forward this to technical industry professionals in your network. You can read more about the TEALS Program on their website at Microsoft.com/TEALS.

Roneagle License Plates

The first 100 McDonogh 35 High School Louisiana license plates have been ordered.
The Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles Office of Special Plates is currently conducting validation and testing. The first 100 plates will be issued via a third-party online auction. The bidding for numbers 1, 35 and 100, will start at $500. The bidding for the remaining numbers will begin at $35.00. Bidding will begin on Monday, June 14, 2021 at 12:00 am CST and end Monday, June 28, 2021 at 11:59 am CST. The auctions will take place over the course of several days. Winners will be notified via email or text message. Once notified, you will have 72 hours to pay the cost of your winning bid. If you fail to respond and pay within the 72 hours, you will lose the opportunity to get that license plate number and the next highest bidder will be contacted.
Please remember you are still responsible for any taxes and fees assigned to your vehicle by the Department of Motor Vehicle and an additional $50.00 for a personalized plate.
The plates can only be used on cars, passenger trucks, SUVs and motor homes registered in the state of Louisiana.
All proceeds from the auction and the sale of the McDonogh 35 High School license plates will support students of McDonogh 35 High School.

Renaming Facilities Initiative

NOLA Public Schools (formerly OPSB) decided to assess the names of all district facilities that have names of Confederate soldiers or slave owners. John McDonogh was a slave owner who left money in his will for schools for poor white children and children of freed people of color. None of these funds ever reached the children who attended McDonogh 35, yet for decades young people attending McDonogh 35 have excelled in business, education, medicine, politics, entrepreneurship and many other areas.

We need to inform NOLA Public Schools that We are 35! Please send the attached letter (MS Word version) (PDF version) to community@nolapublicschools.com by April 16. You may modify the letter or use as is to let your voice be heard. Feel free to include your name and the year you graduated.

Thinking of All of You

Without a doubt, we are living through an unprecedented global health situation and a continued racial and equity fight. As we move through these challenging and uncertain times, we wanted to reach out to you to let you know that we are thinking about you and wishing all of you nothing but health and safety for yourself and your loved ones. We have all been affected by this pandemic as well as the social unrest in our nation sparked by the recent murders of our Black brothers and sisters. Black Lives Matter!!
Whether you are grieving the loss of a loved one during this time, recovering from COVID yourself, protesting the injustice, praying for those on the front line, or serving in some other needed role during this revolution, We encourage you to reach out to your Roneagle classmates. The relationships you formed at McDonogh 35 are bonds that will endure for a lifetime. Together we will navigate these difficult times and emerge a more resilient and inclusive community.
Stay Roneagle strong!

Alumni Association 2020 Scholarship Awards

For the 2019-2020 school year, the McDonogh 35 Alumni Association will award scholarships to deserving students via its annual Scholarship Program.   The McDonogh35 Scholarship Committee is chaired by alumna Ronelda Brister, class of 1980. Scholarships are awarded to seniors based on the applicants’ grade-point averages, level of service in the school and community, strength of essay composition, and interview process.   After the rigorous process was completed, these scholars were awarded the following amounts to apply toward their college needs:
  • Tarionne Smith:   $3,000 to attend Xavier University of Louisiana
  • Tyler White:         $2,500 to attend Arts Institute of Chicago
  • Tialiyah Tate:       $2,000 to attend Northwestern State University of Louisiana
  • Winter Newman:  $1,500 to attend Louisiana State University
Along with these scholarships, the Association partners with the family of Clarence “Chip” Sims (Class of 1988) to award the Chip Sims Scholarship to a deserving and high-achieving student-athlete. The Sims family established this scholarship in 2016 to honor Mr. Sims who passed away that year. This year’s honoree is Jada Vincent, who will receive $1,000 toward her attendance at Louisiana State University.
Also, the Class of 1980 will award scholarships to two seniors pursuing majors in the Creative Arts field. These seniors are: Tyler White, who will attend the Arts Institute of Chicago and study Animation Art – and Kendra Norris, who will attend Alabama State University and study Dance. Each honoree will receive $1,000 toward their college needs. Alumna Sheila Prater is the President of the 1980 Class Reunion Committee.
