Renaming Facilities Initiative
NOLA Public Schools (formerly OPSB) decided to assess the names of all district facilities that have names of Confederate soldiers or slave owners. John McDonogh was a slave owner who left money in his will for schools for poor white children and children of freed people of color. None of these funds ever reached the children who attended McDonogh 35, yet for decades young people attending McDonogh 35 have excelled in business, education, medicine, politics, entrepreneurship and many other areas.
We need to inform NOLA Public Schools that We are 35! Please send the attached letter (MS Word version) (PDF version) to community@
nolapublicschools.com by April 16. You may modify the letter or use as is to let your voice be heard. Feel free to include your name and the year you graduated.
